General Information

RAF Brampton Wyton Henlow

RAF Brampton Wyton Henlow is the result of a number of merges: Brampton with Wyton in the mid-1990s, followed by the addition of Henlow on 1 Apr 01. The sites retain their own identities, but are run under a single command with many of the major support functions centralised. The unit also provides support for RAF Stanbridge, and many small units located in the UK and abroad. The Station Commander's principal office is at Wyton, but he retains offices at Brampton and Henlow, as do his 3 functional wing commanders: OC Station Support Wing, OC Personnel Support Wing and the Head of Contract Monitoring Wing (a Civil Servant). The role of the Station on each of the sites is to provide support for lodger units.

RAF Brampton

RAF Brampton is ever synonymous with the Joint Air Reconnaissance Intelligent Centre (JARIC) that has been based on the site since the mid-1950s. In addition, number of other lodger units, including Defence Estates and several elements of the Defence Equipment and Support are located in the old command headquarters building. That building also provides a base for the Defence Security Standards Organisation and for the RAF Infrastructure Branch (East Region).

RAF Wyton

RAF Wyton is the largest of the 3 sites that make up the Station, and has a long and distinguished history. Remembered as the home of the World War II Pathfinder Force, the Station can trace its history back to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. Now it is the principle home of the Defence Engineering and Support (DE&S). It also houses elements of many other organisations, with the still-active airfield providing a home to No 2 Squadron No 1 Elementary Flying Training School, the University of London Air Squadron, Cambridge University Air Squadron and No 5 Air Experience Flight.

RAF Henlow

RAF Henlow has been a ground-training base specialising in electronics since the end of the Second World War and was for many years synonymous with the RAF Signals Engineering Establishment (RAFSEE). The Station is now home to the Directorate of the Chief Technology Offices (DCTO), which is part of the Defence Communications Services Agency (DCSA) within the DLO. In addition it houses the Joint Arms Control and Inspection Group (JACIG), HQ Provost Marshal (RAF), Tactical Provost Wing, the RAF Centre for Aviation Medicine (CAM) and No 616 Volunteer Gliding School, which operates Vigilant T1 motor gliders.
